The Invisible Threads of Energy, Emotion, and Thought

We often see how our emotions and thoughts influence our outer terrain but how often do we stop to notice how they shape our inner terrain? And, in turn, how our inner terrain influences our thoughts and emotions, beyond organs and systems?

Lately, I’ve been diving into articles about mitochondria and their role in mental health. Specifically, I’ve been fascinated by how they impact our thoughts and emotions. A recent publication highlights that energy is generated in mitochondria through ATP. Regions of the brain with higher mitochondrial density and efficiency are better equipped to sustain complex processes like abstract thought, self-reflection, and emotional regulation.

The MitoBrainMap defines baseline mitochondrial distribution and energy capacity across brain, the areas responsible for executive thinking, memory, empathy, and emotional regulation.

This suggests that mitochondrial specialisation evolved to support the intricacy of human thought and emotional life.

I can’t help but think of 1 Corinthians 12:22:

“Those parts of the body that seem weaker are indispensable.”

When we see the body as fearfully and wonderfully made with intention and design, it’s vital to see the bigger picture.

We cannot overlook any part or the role it plays; the body functions as a whole.

Paul continues in 1 Corinthians 12:24:

“God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, so that there would be no division, but that the members would have the same concern for each other.”

While he is speaking metaphorically about people, it also applies beautifully to our inner terrain. In modern science and Western medicine, there’s a tendency to focus only on outward symptoms, organs, or systems.

Yet, energy within is what sustains life, the mitochondria, the trillions of microorganisms, these unseen forces are quietly sustaining us.

The energy within not only keeps us alive but connects us to one another and to the environment around us.

This is why our relationships and surroundings can influence our thoughts and emotions so profoundly.

Think about it:

  • Mitochondria the “powerhouses” of our cells, quietly fuel life. Tiny, unseen, indispensable. Without them, no cell functions, and no body lives.

  • Microorganisms billions of bacteria, fungi, and microbes live symbiotically within us. Often overlooked or even feared, they are crucial for digestion, immunity, neurotransmitter production, and emotional balance. They are the “weaker-looking” parts, yet life collapses without them.

Mitochondria rely on nutrients, microorganisms rely on balance, and we rely on the integration of it all. When Paul says the weaker parts are indispensable, it mirrors this scientific truth: the smallest, most hidden forces sustain the whole. If one part suffers mitochondrial dysfunction, gut imbalance the whole body suffers.

So, how can we support these “weaker” parts, the smallest forces within? Nutrients and minerals are key. The food we eat not only sustains our outer terrain but reminds us how much we rely on God’s provision. Minerals after all, we were made from the dust of the earth are foundational to our biology.

Yet, it’s not about more or less; it’s about balance.

Returning to mitochondria and their support of our thoughts and emotions, there are clear nutrients and conditions that support their function but, as in life, everything requires balance and coherence. This is why I love hair tissue mineral analysis: it allows a glimpse into the ratios and scales of all parts.

It’s not about simply supplementing deficiencies but bringing the body into harmony.

1 Corinthians 12:26:

“If one member suffers, all suffer; if one member is honored, all rejoice.”

Every part relies on the others.

This is why, whether we look at the external or internal body, we must see the bigger picture. Supporting the whole body not just organs or systems is essential. Our emotions and thoughts are as integral to sustaining life as the blood in our veins or the mitochondria in our cells.

Alone, each part cannot thrive; together, they flourish.
