Called to Facilitate, Not Fix: Holding Space with Christ at the Centre
When I began my journey as a practitioner, I didn’t know what it would look like. I couldn’t have imagined how much it would bring my faith to the forefront or how deeply it would become the vehicle for living out the calling placed on my life.
The word facilitate means “to make (an action or process) easy or easier.” And yet, I think the word is often misunderstood. In healing spaces, it’s not about fixing someone. It’s not about having all the answers or giving advice. Instead,
it’s about holding space creating an environment of safety, presence, and compassion so that someone else can gently begin to access their own inner wisdom and healing, in partnership with the Holy Spirit.
We see this so clearly in Galatians 6:2:
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
This verse doesn’t say to take over someone’s burdens or solve them, but rather to carry with, to walk alongside, to support, to love practically and patiently. That’s what facilitation is.
It is co-regulation, not control. It is presence, not pressure.
Somatic therapy is deeply rooted in the body and how fitting that Scripture reminds us that we are the body of Christ. 1 COR 12:2
“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.”
We all have a role to play. But how often do we try to map it out ourselves? We chase careers, build lifestyles, and craft identities that we think are ours, trying to do good, trying to help, trying to find our place. But in all that planning, striving, and performing, something can still feel off.
For me, that something was God’s voice.
I had moments where I genuinely wanted to serve, but I didn’t know how.
I didn’t yet understand that my purpose wasn’t something I had to manufacture it was something I needed to receive. Not by willpower, but by surrender. Not my will, but His.
“Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” Ecc 4:9-10
This is what we all long for, to not fall alone. And yet the journey remains ours. No one can walk it for us. But having someone walk with us can make all the difference.
In somatic work, we learn that our bodies carry memory, story, trauma, and hope. And in faith, we believe that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.
We are not separate from Christ presence He dwells within. The Comforter is within. The capacity is within.
Sometimes, though, we just need someone to come alongside and gently help us remember.
I believe that’s what a true facilitator does, they make the path a little easier to walk, not by doing it for you, but by holding the lantern, bearing witness, and pointing back to the Light when things feel dark. And for me, that light is always Christ.
John 1:4-5
“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
I no longer feel I need to know all the answers. I no longer believe that healing is my job, it’s not. It never was.
My role is to facilitate, to create a safe space for others to remember what’s already within them. To help them reconnect to the One who truly heals.
So, if you’ve ever felt called to help but didn’t know how, maybe facilitation is your path too. Not to fix, not to save, but to witness, support, and companion others, just as Christ walks with us.
And if you’re walking your own journey and feel alone — know this:
